Kuwait, UNESCO deepen partnership on education and cultural heritage

Kuwait has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening international cooperation in education and culture, with Education Minister Eng. Sayed Jalal Al-Tabtabaie holding a series of high-level meetings at UNESCO headquarters in Paris aimed at advancing education reform and preserving the country’s cultural heritage.

The visit, held on the sidelines of the Education Transformation+4 Summit, underscored Kuwait’s efforts to broaden partnerships with specialized international organizations and leverage global expertise to enhance the quality of its education system.

The minister was accompanied by Kuwait’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Dr. Ali Al-Mudhaf, and Assistant Undersecretary for Educational Affairs Hamad Abdullah Al-Hamad.

During talks with UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany, the two sides emphasized expanding cooperation in education and reinforcing the longstanding partnership between Kuwait and UNESCO.

Discussions focused on benefiting from international expertise to support educational initiatives, improve learning outcomes and align Kuwait’s education sector with evolving global standards.

In a separate meeting with UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education Stefania Giannini, the minister discussed strengthening collaboration in teacher training, professional development and the exchange of best international practices.

Al-Tabtabaie said investing in teachers remains central to improving educational quality and achieving sustainable reforms, stressing the importance of adopting internationally recognized standards to enhance educators’ professional competencies.

The discussions also explored mechanisms for expanding technical cooperation in priority education sectors, strengthening institutional coordination and supporting Kuwait’s long-term education development strategy through capacity building and knowledge exchange.

On the cultural front, Al-Tabtabaie met UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture Ernesto Ottone Ramírez to review Kuwait’s efforts to nominate additional heritage sites for inscription on UNESCO’s international lists.

The talks also covered ways to accelerate technical cooperation and reinforce coordination on safeguarding both tangible and intangible cultural heritage.

The minister said preserving Kuwait’s cultural heritage is an integral part of strengthening the country’s national identity and international cultural presence, expressing hope that closer cooperation with UNESCO will help showcase Kuwait’s historical and civilizational legacy while supporting broader heritage conservation efforts.
