France reports 131 drowning deaths since June 19 amid heatwave

France has recorded 131 drowning incidents since June 19 as the country continues to face intense heatwaves that have pushed residents and visitors toward swimming areas for relief from soaring temperatures.

French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari announced the figures on Friday, highlighting growing concerns over water safety during periods of extreme heat, when more people turn to beaches, swimming pools, lakes, and rivers to escape high temperatures.

The increase in drowning cases comes as France and several parts of Europe experience severe heat conditions. Health authorities have also warned of the wider impact of extreme temperatures on public health.

French Health Minister Stephanie Rist said last week that the country recorded around 2,025 excess deaths during the heatwave that struck in June, with the number of fatalities particularly increasing among people aged over 45.

Excess deaths refer to the difference between the actual number of deaths recorded during a specific period and the number expected under normal conditions.

Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious during hot weather, especially around water, and to follow safety guidelines to prevent accidents.

Experts continue to emphasize the importance of close supervision of children, avoiding risky swimming conditions, and ensuring proper precautions are taken during extreme weather.
