Addressing the 137th session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London, Khamis Al-Shamkhi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology for Transport Affairs, underscored the Sultanate’s determination to preserve maritime security, protect lives at sea, and uphold the principles of international law governing navigation.
Al-Shamkhi stressed that Oman remains firmly committed to maintaining safe and secure sea lanes that are vital to global supply chains and international trade.
He reaffirmed the Sultanate’s support for freedom of navigation as a fundamental principle that underpins stability and prosperity in the international maritime sector.
On the sidelines of the IMO meeting, the Omani delegation held discussions with Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, focusing on expanding cooperation in maritime security, navigational safety, and environmental protection.
The talks also explored ways to strengthen joint coordination in responding to emerging maritime challenges, enhance preparedness for regional and international incidents, and reinforce collaborative efforts aimed at protecting the marine environment.
Oman’s participation in the IMO session reflects its growing role in promoting regional and international maritime stability at a time when secure shipping corridors have become increasingly critical to the resilience of global trade and energy markets.
By advocating a rules-based maritime order and closer international cooperation, the Sultanate continues to position itself as a key stakeholder in safeguarding one of the world’s most vital economic lifelines.
