Kuwait tightens grip on counterfeit trade, closes eight stores

Kuwaiti authorities have intensified efforts to combat the spread of counterfeit goods in local markets after a large-scale inspection campaign led to the shutdown of eight shops accused of selling fake international brands.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry, working in coordination with the Hawalli Investigations Department, carried out the operation following weeks of monitoring and surveillance targeting suspected outlets involved in illegal trademark activities.

Inspection teams raided several commercial establishments and confiscated large quantities of counterfeit merchandise, including clothing, shoes, and handbags carrying imitation labels of well-known global brands.

Officials said the campaign forms part of a broader government drive to strengthen intellectual property protection, preserve consumer confidence, and curb illegal commercial practices that harm Kuwait’s business environment.

Director of the Commercial Control Department Faisal Al-Ansari said the authorities are taking a strict approach toward businesses dealing in counterfeit goods, stressing that such activities damage both consumers and legitimate trademark owners while affecting Kuwait’s international standing in anti-counterfeiting and intellectual property protection indicators.

The ministry confirmed that legal violations were recorded against the establishments involved and immediate closure orders were issued against eight stores.

Authorities also revealed that workers found violating regulations during the campaign could face legal action and deportation measures in coordination with the Ministry of Interior.

Officials stressed that inspection campaigns will continue in markets across all governorates as part of ongoing efforts to enforce commercial laws, protect consumers, and eliminate illegal trading practices.
