Kuwait reaffirms strong partnership with UN on 80th anniversary of its founding

Kuwait’s engagement reflects its dedication to the three core pillars of the United Nations: maintaining international peace and security, promoting sustainable development, and protecting human rights -- Abdullah Al-Yahya

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullah Al-Yahya reaffirmed Kuwait’s steadfast commitment to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, describing it as the cornerstone of an international order founded on justice, peace, and cooperation among nations.

His remarks were delivered during the celebration of United Nations Day 2025, attended by diplomats and representatives of the international community.

Al-Yahya highlighted Kuwait’s active role since joining the UN in 1963, emphasizing its contributions to the organization’s programs, funds, and specialized agencies.

He noted that Kuwait’s engagement reflects its dedication to the three core pillars of the United Nations: maintaining international peace and security, promoting sustainable development, and protecting human rights.

Marking the 80th anniversary of the UN and the entry into force of its Charter in 1945, Al-Yahya described the founding document as ushering in a new era of international relations.

He stressed that, eight decades later, the UN continues to serve as a unifying platform for nations, addressing global challenges while promoting peace, development, and human dignity.

“The theme of this year’s celebration, ‘Let’s Build Our Future Together,’ embodies solidarity and collective responsibility,” he said, highlighting Kuwait’s dedication to fostering multilateral cooperation to secure a peaceful and prosperous future for all generations.

Al-Yahya also pointed to Kuwait’s hosting of the United Nations House, which houses more than 20 UN agencies, programs, and organizations.

He described it as a symbol of the deep partnership between Kuwait and the UN, underscoring the country’s ongoing support for humanitarian, developmental, and diplomatic efforts.

United Nations Resident Coordinator Ghada Al-Taher emphasized the significance of the milestone, calling it a historical moment to reaffirm commitment to the UN Charter.

She praised Kuwait’s continuous support, noting its pivotal role as a global humanitarian hub and as a strong voice in multilateral diplomacy.

Al-Taher highlighted Kuwait’s hosting of key UN conferences over the past year, including the High-Level Conference on Counter-Terrorism and the Arab Regional Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction.

The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) also announced that it has contributed $132 million through 49 grants to development and humanitarian projects in partnership with UN agencies worldwide.

Acting Director General Waleed Al-Bahar outlined that these grants span critical sectors such as education, health, infrastructure, energy, water, and the environment, and support urgent humanitarian programs, refugee assistance, and disaster mitigation.

Through these efforts, Kuwait continues to consolidate its role as a global leader in humanitarian aid, sustainable development, and international cooperation.
