Kuwait Oil Company charts path to 17 GW of renewable energy by 2050

The company cleared nearly seven million square meters of unexploded ordnance and rehabilitated over onemillion tons of contaminated soil at Sabriya Oil Field in northern Kuwait.

Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) has developed a plan for the energy transition by 2050, targeting 17 GW and implementing initiatives such as the Energy Efficiency Enhancement Initiative, Al-Anbaa newspaper reported, citing responsible oil sources.

In 2024, the company completed a comprehensive energy audit and roadmap, outlining the scope of work, results, and recommendations. The audit focused on assessing current energy usage patterns and proposing quick, cost-effective solutions to enhance efficiency and lower operating costs.

The sources said that one of Kuwait Oil Company’s initiatives is the development of recommendations in the company’s operational areas to achieve its energy-saving goals. This is being done through a comprehensive approach applied to the company’s assets, including energy consumption evaluations and data analysis.

Feasibility of installing renewable energy plants, wind technologies, and solar power

Additionally, a scope of work was developed to study the technical feasibility of forming a renewable energy portfolio. With the assistance of a technical consultant, this study assesses the feasibility of installing a suitable combination of renewable energy plants, wind technologies, and photovoltaic energy to produce 1 GW of energy and meet part of the company’s electricity demand.

Furthermore, Kuwait Oil Company’s green energy initiatives, aimed at reducing the impact of global warming, include the installation of solar panels at the sites of the South and North Kuwait projects under the United Nations Program for the Reclamation of Land Polluted by the Iraqi invasion.

Carbon emissions reduced by 16 tons

This initiative has significantly reduced carbon dioxide emissions by more than 16 tons, while also increasing the proportion of renewable energy for those projects to 36% in northern Kuwait and 15% in southern Kuwait since their inception.

The company also successfully removed nearly seven million square meters of unexploded ordnance and contaminated soil from the Sabriya Oil Field in northern Kuwait, and treated and rehabilitated more than one million tons of contaminated soil.

Cleansing of oil pollution

On November 15, 2023, the official announcement was made regarding the liberation of the lands of the Sabriya Oil Field and their cleansing of oil pollution resulting from the Gulf War in 1990, which enhances the availability of new areas for the company’s operations and improves the quality of the Kuwaiti environment.

In addition to these ambitious initiatives, the companycontinues to invest in research and development to promote innovation in sustainable energy fields. These efforts include cooperation with local and international academic and research institutions to develop new and effective technologies for renewable energy use and to improve the efficiency of operational processes.

Enhancing human capabilities

Furthermore, the company seeks to enhance human capabilities through specialized training programs aimed at qualifying national cadres in the fields of clean energy and environmental sustainability, reflecting its commitment to transitioning toward a green and sustainable future and building an economy based on knowledge and advanced technology.
