Kuwait slams Iranian attacks as ‘unprecedented’ escalation
A wave of Iranian attacks targeting Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan represents an “unprecedented” escalation of violence in the wider Middle East region, a Kuwaiti diplomat said on Wednesday, condemning what he described as intransigent behavior from Tehran.
The unabated Iranian attacks have rendered the use of diplomacy as an urgent necessity to keep the violence in check, Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the UN and other International Organizations Ambassador Nasser Al-Hayn told KUNA after holding “emergency” talks with his Gulf Arab counterparts in Geneva to discuss developments in the region.
The talks, which came at the behest of Kuwait, aim to ratchet up dialogue among Gulf Cooperation Council states (GCC) in a bid to ensure that the six-member bloc remains united to confront all threats to its security and stability, added the senior diplomat.
He went on to castigate Tehran for “deliberately” targeting vital civilian infrastructure such as power and water desalination plants in Kuwait, saying that those facilities represent the “pulse of life,” for the population there, all of whom would be severely affected if these attacks persist, he said.
Kuwait intends to ramp up diplomacy as part of efforts to halt such transgressions, he said, citing that relevant international organizations and Geneva-based bodies such as the UN Human Rights Council and World Health Organization, have repeatedly condemned Iran’s actions as having shown complete disregard for international laws.
The security of GCC member states is closely intertwined with that of their fellow Arab nations, added the envoy, saying that any threat to their security and stability was tantamount to a grave assault on the region’s stability, urging the international community to intervene and put a decisive end to these attacks.
Gulf Arab countries stand in solidarity with one another and remain united to face any potential threat to their collective security, while Kuwait would continue to work closely with its partners to protect the region’s security and stability, Al-Hayn emphasized.
