The United States has intensified its military campaign against Iran, tightening its naval blockade and launching an 11th consecutive night of airstrikes, as the conflict continues to disrupt regional shipping, aviation and global energy markets.
US-led naval forces reportedly intercepted several commercial vessels attempting to enter or leave Iranian ports, redirecting eight ships after ordering them to alter course. Another vessel was disabled after allegedly failing to comply with repeated warnings.
Washington said the blockade is intended to prevent maritime trade with Iran while allowing vessels not engaged in Iranian commerce to continue transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
At the same time, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed a fresh wave of overnight strikes against military targets across Iran, including locations in Bushehr, Tehran, Bandar Abbas, Chabahar, Mahshahr, Behbahan, Parchin, Urmia, Tabriz, Baneh and Sirik.
Among the reported targets was the Bidboland Gas Refinery in Mahshahr, one of Iran’s largest gas-processing facilities, while another strike reportedly hit the military section of Bushehr Airport.
CENTCOM said the campaign is aimed at degrading Iran’s military capabilities that threaten commercial shipping and civilian vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz.
The conflict has also placed mounting pressure on global energy markets. Brent crude oil rose above $95 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) climbed above $88 per barrel amid concerns over potential disruptions to oil exports and maritime trade through the Gulf.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told lawmakers that the military campaign has so far cost the United States an estimated $37.5 billion, up from earlier projections. The Pentagon has requested approximately $67 billion in supplemental funding to sustain military operations through the end of September, the Gulf News reports.
Meanwhile, the US military identified Sergeant Michael Emmanuel Swinton as the third American service member to die following recent Iranian attacks in Iraq and Jordan. He was killed during an explosive ordnance disposal operation involving an intercepted Iranian drone in northern Iraq.
The deteriorating security environment has also affected regional air travel. Several Gulf carriers, including Emirates, Etihad Airways, flydubai and Air Arabia, have adjusted or cancelled selected services to destinations in the Gulf due to evolving airspace restrictions and operational considerations.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned against any attempt by Iran to assert control over the Strait of Hormuz, describing freedom of navigation through international waterways as a fundamental principle that must be protected.
He said Washington remained open to constructive negotiations with Tehran if Iran demonstrated a genuine commitment to diplomacy.
As military operations continue and diplomatic efforts struggle to gain momentum, concerns are growing that the prolonged conflict could have far-reaching consequences for regional stability, international shipping, energy supplies and the global economy.
