Kuwait floats tenders for major power and water plants amid urban expansion

The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy is intensifying efforts to execute critical electricity and water generation projects to meet Kuwait’s growing consumption, driven by ongoing urban expansion.
Two key projects — Phase 4 of the Subbiya Power Plant, aimed at adding 900 megawatts of capacity, and Phase 2 of the Doha West Water Desalination Plant, targeting 60 million imperial gallons per day — are now advancing after the Central Agency for Public Tenders opened bids on Wednesday, reports Al-Rai daily.
According to informed sources, the ministry aims to accelerate the review and implementation of both projects to support the country’s rising infrastructure and population needs. The Central Tenders Committee is expected to forward the bids to the ministry next week for evaluation by dedicated committees, after which selected companies will be recommended for implementation.
For the Subbiya power plant, the lowest bid came in at 516.8 million dinars, followed by 548.4 million and 569.3 million dinars.
As for the Doha West desalination plant, bids ranged from 114.2 million dinars (lowest) to 174.1 million dinars.
Meanwhile, the consultant selection tender for the 3,600-megawatt Nuwaiseeb power project (Phase 1) has been postponed until August 26, marking a temporary delay in one of Kuwait’s largest planned energy undertakings.
These initiatives reflect the government’s continued commitment to enhancing national utility infrastructure in line with future development needs.
