Kuwait keeps ‘lights on’ after attack hits power and desalination plants
Critical infrastructure targeted, but services hold as Kuwait ramps up emergency response

Electricity and water services remain fully operational despite drone attacks targeting key infrastructure at dawn, according to the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy.
Ministry spokesperson Fatima Jawhar Hayat confirmed that precautionary measures and emergency preparedness prevented any disruption to services, even after two power generation and water desalination plants were struck amid escalating regional tensions.
She described the attacks, carried out by hostile drones during what officials termed Iranian aggression against Kuwait, as causing significant material damage, forcing two power generation units out of service. However, no casualties were reported.
Hayat noted that electricity loads are being monitored around the clock, with alternative operational plans activated to compensate for the affected capacity and ensure uninterrupted supply, reports Al-Rai daily.
Technical and emergency teams have been deployed in line with the ministry’s comprehensive contingency plans, while assessments are ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage and establish a clear repair timeline.
She added that close coordination is underway with security authorities to facilitate access for maintenance crews and expedite inspections of the damaged facilities.
Despite the severity of the damage, the ministry stressed that maintaining continuous electricity and water services remains a top priority, with robust backup systems in place to safeguard supply stability.
