Kuwait calls for global nuclear accountability, urges Israel to join NPT

Kuwait reaffirmed its firm commitment to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, stressing the importance of implementing its provisions in a balanced and comprehensive manner to reinforce international peace and security.
Speaking before the Second Main Committee of the NPT Review Conference at the United Nations headquarters, Abdulaziz Al-Saeedi, Third Secretary of Kuwait’s Permanent Mission, underscored that non-proliferation remains a cornerstone of the treaty and a key element in maintaining global stability.
He noted that Kuwait has fully complied with the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement of the International Atomic Energy Agency, adopting an approach based on transparency and responsibility.
At the same time, he expressed concern over countries developing nuclear capabilities outside the treaty framework and without international oversight, pointing specifically to Israel as an exceptional case that undermines the credibility of the non-proliferation regime.
Al-Saeedi emphasized that the treaty’s effectiveness depends on equal commitment by all parties, without selectivity or double standards. He warned against introducing concepts or practices not grounded in the treaty, saying such steps could weaken the global non-proliferation framework and create structural imbalances.
On the Iranian nuclear file, he stressed the need for Iran to fully comply with its international obligations and cooperate transparently with the IAEA to ensure the peaceful nature of its nuclear program and enhance regional stability. He added that resolving outstanding issues requires constructive dialogue, adherence to international law and full transparency.
Concluding Kuwait’s statement, Al-Saeedi called on the international community to uphold its responsibilities, urging Israel to join the NPT and place all its nuclear facilities under comprehensive IAEA safeguards to strengthen the regime’s effectiveness and promote regional and global security.
