The Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) announced the planting of 1,500 mangrove seedlings in Jahra Reserve to enhance its area and promote restoration efforts in the country, in coordination with the Public Authority for the Environment, according to a report by Al Jarida newspaper.
Ali Khashawi, director of the company’s services department, told KUNA that members of the company’s volunteer team, along with the Department of Safety, Health, and Environment and the Department of Public Services, represented the company in this activity, which contributes to mitigating and improving the effects of climate change.
Khashawi added that the company aims to make this initiative an annual practice, through which it will import mangrove seeds from the Sultanate of Oman and grow them in the company’s nurseries before planting them in the reserve. He noted that the company aspires to increase the number of mangrove seedlings, having developed an initial plan for next year to plant 9,000 seedlings in stages in the reserve.
He stressed that cultivating this plant contributes to increasing the green area in Kuwait and enhancing the carbon sequestration process, which aligns with the objectives of the environmental initiatives under the 2050 Energy Transformation Strategy for the oil sector and carbon neutrality.
For his part, Dr. Abdullah Al-Zaidan, the Deputy Director General for Technical Affairs at the authority, stated to KUNA that this step continues the initiatives aimed at rehabilitating biodiversity in Kuwait. The Authority has supported the National Petroleum Company by cultivating about 1,500 Crimean plants in the Jahra Reserve.
