Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran is not currently negotiating with Washington, although messages continue to pass between the two sides through mediators.
Speaking to Iranian state television, Araghchi said the ongoing contacts should not be considered negotiations, stressing that formal talks cannot resume until the US addresses what Iran describes as violations of a memorandum of understanding between the two countries.
He said mediators are working to create conditions for renewed negotiations and rebuild a basis for mutual understanding.
However, Tehran maintains that the alleged violations must first be addressed and compensation provided before talks can restart, according to news reports.
Araghchi also discussed negotiations with Oman over the Strait of Hormuz, warning that any agreement with Muscat would not automatically lead to the reopening of the strategic waterway.
He said additional conditions must be met before Hormuz can reopen and that these conditions have already been communicated to Washington through mediators.
The Iranian foreign minister further described changes to maritime routes in the Strait of Hormuz as a technical and legal issue, stressing that such changes should not be interpreted as reopening the waterway.
