India launches UN Security Council campaign for 2028-29
India has formally launched its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028-29 term, reaffirming its growing global role while renewing its longstanding call for comprehensive reforms of the world body.
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar unveiled India’s campaign under the theme “SHANTI – Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust and Integrity” during a special event at the UN Headquarters attended by diplomats, ambassadors and senior UN officials.
The campaign presents India as a responsible global partner committed to strengthening multilateralism, promoting international peace and supporting a rules-based global order at a time of increasing geopolitical uncertainty.
India will contest the sole Asia-Pacific Group seat against Tajikistan in elections scheduled for June 2027, with the successful candidate serving on the Security Council during 2028 and 2029.
The bid comes as global conflicts continue to dominate international diplomacy, including the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, rising tensions in West Asia, and growing concerns over international security and economic stability.
Launching the campaign, Jaishankar emphasized that India’s engagement with the United Nations is guided by the principles of cooperation, trust, integrity and respect for international norms, values encapsulated in the SHANTI initiative.
The campaign builds on India’s strong record at the United Nations. The country has served as an elected member of the Security Council eight times, most recently during the 2021-22 term, when it actively participated in discussions on international peace, counterterrorism, maritime security and peacekeeping.
Even outside the Council, India has remained an active participant in UN deliberations, advocating for sustainable development, climate action, counterterrorism cooperation and greater representation for developing countries in international institutions.
Jaishankar’s visit to New York also includes meetings with UN Secretary-General António Guterres before he travels to Brussels to participate in the India-European Union Trade and Technology Council meeting, underscoring India’s expanding diplomatic engagement across multiple global platforms.
