EPA pursues violator for dumping waste in protected marine area

The Environment Public Authority (EPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring and addressing all practices that harm Kuwait’s marine and terrestrial environments, stressing that legal action will be taken against violators. The Authority also called on the public to play an active role in safeguarding the environment and preserving natural resources for future generations.
Speaking to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Director of Public Relations and Media at the EPA, Sheikha Al-Ibrahim, said the Authority recently took legal measures against an individual who disposed of waste in the marine environment surrounding Umm Al-Maradim Island.
The action followed the circulation of a video on social media showing a visitor throwing waste into the sea near the island. Al-Ibrahim explained that the EPA immediately monitored the footage and coordinated with the General Directorate of Coast Guard at the Ministry of Interior to identify the individual responsible.
Following the investigation, the violator was summoned and the necessary legal procedures were completed, including the issuance of an environmental violation report in accordance with Kuwait’s environmental protection laws and regulations.
Al-Ibrahim noted that the violation was issued under Article 33 of the Environmental Protection Law, which prohibits the disposal of garbage or waste outside designated containers. She added that the law stipulates penalties ranging from KD50 to KD500 for individuals found in breach of the provision.
The EPA emphasized that protecting Kuwait’s natural ecosystems remains a national responsibility and urged residents and visitors alike to adhere to environmental regulations to ensure the sustainability of the country’s marine and terrestrial resources.
