Fifa World Cup 2026

Australia off to winning start with 2-0 victory over Turkey at World Cup

Australia made an impressive start to its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a disciplined 2-0 victory over Turkey in their Group D opener on Saturday.

Goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe secured all three points for the Socceroos, who joined the United States at the top of the group standings after the Americans defeated Paraguay 4-1 in their opening match.

Australia struck first midway through the opening half through Irankunda, who capped a swift counterattack with a composed finish to put his side ahead against the run of play.

Turkey responded by dominating possession and pushing numbers forward in search of an equalizer, but Australia’s defense remained resolute throughout the contest.

The Socceroos absorbed sustained pressure for long periods, with defenders led by Harry Souttar producing a series of crucial interceptions and blocks to frustrate the Turkish attack.

Goalkeeper Patrick Beach also played a key role in preserving Australia’s lead, making several important interventions as Turkey continued to threaten.

Despite Turkey’s territorial advantage, Australia remained dangerous on the break and doubled their lead in the 75th minute. Metcalfe unleashed a powerful low strike from outside the penalty area that beat the goalkeeper and effectively sealed the result.

Turkey continued to press during the closing stages and finished the match with a significant edge in possession and attempts on goal. However, they were unable to find a way past Australia’s well-organized defense.

The clean sheet will be particularly pleasing for coach Tony Popovic, whose side executed its tactical plan effectively against a Turkish team that many observers had tipped as a potential dark horse of the tournament.

Australia’s disciplined defensive display and clinical finishing provided the perfect foundation for their World Cup campaign, boosting their chances of progressing to the knockout stages.

The victory leaves the Socceroos level on three points with the United States at the summit of Group D, setting up a potentially decisive clash between the two sides later in the group stage.

For Turkey, the defeat represents an early setback and increases the pressure ahead of their remaining group matches as they seek to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

Australia will now look to build on the momentum from a confident opening-night performance as they continue their quest for a place in the tournament’s knockout rounds.
