Iran said on Sunday that it had made progress in discussions with Oman on arrangements for managing the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important waterways for global oil and gas shipments.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said several rounds of talks were held in Tehran on Friday and Saturday between Iranian and Omani deputy foreign ministers.
The discussions focused on establishing “common principles and operational mechanisms” to ensure safe navigation through the strategic waterway while respecting the sovereignty of both countries.
Baqaei described the talks as “useful,” saying the two sides had achieved progress and that technical and political consultations would continue.
The talks come amid heightened regional tensions following renewed US military action against Iran and ongoing disputes over control and security arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz.
In June, Iran and Oman had agreed to discuss possible arrangements related to service fees for vessels passing through the strait, a proposal opposed by Washington. Oman has also maintained that ships could continue transiting through its waters, a position that drew objections from Tehran.
Iran said on Saturday that no new US attacks had been recorded after nearly two weeks of strikes.
Reports indicated that US President Donald Trump had been presented with plans for further military action but chose instead to support renewed diplomatic efforts, coinciding with the arrival of an Omani delegation in Tehran for discussions on reopening the waterway.
Baqaei said there had been “no change” in the status of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which remains a critical route for international energy shipments.
