An evening of soulful entertainment at JACC

Music aficionados witnessed a mesmerizing evening of soulful entertainment at the Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Center (JACC) with the sublime performance of one of India’s greatest violinists Dr.Lakshminarayana Subramaniam on Monday 18 November.

Performing to a packed hall, the violin virtuoso gave audiences a glimpse of his genius with some soul rendering music that was beyond doubt the highlight of the evening, organized by the Indian Business and Professional Council (IBPC).

The evening began with the chairman of IBPC, Kaizer Shaker, welcoming and thanking the guests for their presence. He also thanked all the members of the committee for making the event possible.

In his address to the guests, Ambassador of India, H.E. Adarsh Swaika praised Dr. Subramanian’s music prowess calling him India’s greatest violinist. He thanked the organizers for providing audiences the opportunity to listen to the musical genius and his troupe.

Audiences  comprising of diplomats, Kuwaitis, foreigners and members of the Indian diaspora, were then taken on a musical pilgrimage, as  Dr Subramaniam segued from one musical note to another, even venturing into semitones unfamiliar to many ears.

Accompanied on the violin by his son Ambi Subramaniam, the father-son duo weaved magic with their violins frequently drawing applause for the modal scale melodies (ragas) they played.

Tanmoy Bose on the tabla and Ramana Murthy on the mridangam ably assisted the main performers by providing the reverberating rhythms, while N. Radhakrishnan on the ghatam and G. Satya Rai on the morsing delivered a perfect counterbalance to the rhythms.

Even though many among the audience were unfamiliar with Indian classical music, Dr. Subramaniam chose fairly accessible material. As with all great artists, however, the details quickly seemed less significant than the total experience of hearing a superb and articulate virtuoso, at the top of his form.

A violinist, composer, conductor, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, record producer, and a medical doctor, Dr. Subramaniam received a standing ovation at the end of his hour-and-half long program.
