AmCham Kuwait hosts webinar on IP protection, business growth
Experts shed light on the role of IP protection in driving innovation, investment, and market competitiveness
The American Business Council – American Chamber of Commerce Kuwait (AmCham Kuwait) hosted a webinar titled “Protecting Intellectual Property”, highlighting the importance of intellectual property (IP) protection in supporting innovation, business growth, and international expansion.
The session featured Ms. Rasha Abdelmagid, IP Specialist at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) – Abu Dhabi, UAE, who provided participants with an overview of intellectual property fundamentals, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, industrial designs, and trade secrets, while highlighting their role as valuable business assets.
Ms. Abdelmagid emphasized that protecting intellectual property allows businesses to safeguard their innovations, strengthen their market position, create licensing opportunities, and enhance their long-term competitiveness.
She also discussed the importance of developing an IP strategy aligned with business goals and securing protection in each relevant market, noting that IP rights are territorial and require separate protection based on each country’s legal framework.
The discussion covered common IP challenges faced by businesses, including infringement, counterfeiting, unauthorized use of creative works, and online piracy.
Ms. Abdelmagid highlighted the importance of proactive measures such as early filing, market monitoring, proper agreements with third parties, and seeking professional legal guidance to effectively protect intellectual property rights.
The session also explored key differences between the U.S. and Kuwait IP frameworks, including protection methods for trademarks, copyrights, industrial designs, and trade secrets, while introducing available USPTO resources that support businesses and entrepreneurs in managing their intellectual assets.
The webinar concluded with an engaging Q&A session, allowing participants to discuss practical questions related to IP protection, enforcement, and strategies for safeguarding their business assets.
