Qatar and Iran are discussing a proposal to establish a temporary joint navigational corridor through the Strait of Hormuz as part of diplomatic efforts to ease regional tensions and create conditions for dialogue, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said Thursday.
The proposal was discussed during talks in Tehran between Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The discussions focused on efforts to reduce escalation and establish conditions conducive to dialogue.
They also covered a proposed “transitional framework” for a temporary joint navigational corridor through the strategic waterway and a joint project to clear mines from the strait. Sheikh Mohammed stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty of neighboring states and ensuring freedom of navigation while diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions continue.
Araghchi, meanwhile, expressed Tehran’s appreciation for Qatar’s continued diplomatic efforts to ease tensions and support dialogue. The developments come as concerns over maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz remain high. The UK Maritime Trade Operations organization reported that a tanker caught fire after being struck by an unknown projectile in the strategic waterway.
