Kuwaiti sentenced to 3 years in jail for illegally traveling to conflict zone in Syria

The Court of Cassation has upheld a three-year prison sentence against a Kuwaiti man who is convicted of unlawfully traveling to Syria to participate in conflict-related activity abroad.
The accused was referred to trial after investigations showed that he left Kuwait in 2021 and travelled to the Turkish city of Antakya, where he remained for approximately three years and then left.
Case records indicate that the accused later claimed he had lost consciousness following a major earthquake in the region and subsequently regained awareness in Afrin, Syria.
However, judicial findings concluded that the circumstances surrounding his travel and prolonged stay in the conflict-adjacent area raised serious legal violations under national security-related provisions.
The court ruled that the evidence presented was sufficient to uphold the original verdict, reaffirming Kuwait’s strict legal framework concerning travel to conflict zones and activities that may compromise national security or violate international travel restrictions.
