Why you are always hungry, even when you eat well

Ask Mira : Eating Right to Live Happy & Healthy

You are eating your meals on time regularly, you are opting for foods that are health-inducing, and yet you feel hungry, thinking about food all the time, snacking, and never feeling fully satisfied. If this sounds familiar to you, you are not alone.

Let us break down what is really going on inside your body:
Hunger hormones are out of balance: Hunger is not just about your stomach, it is controlled by hormones. For instance, the hormone ghrelin tells you when you are hungry, while leptin informs you that you are satiated.

When your body is under stress, sleep-deprived, or dieting too hard, these signals get disrupted. As a result, you feel hungry even when you have eaten enough.

You might be eating ‘healthy’ but not satisfyingly:
This is one of the most common mistakes. A typical healthy day might look like salads, fruits and a light dinner. But if your meals are low in protein and fats, or too light your body will constantly be looking for more food. Eating healthy does not mean it is fulfilling.

Blood sugar spikes are driving your cravings:
If your meals are high in white bread, sugary snacks, and refined carbs, you will experience a quick energy spike then hunger again. This cycle makes you feel hungry very quickly even if you are eating enough calories.

Stress is making you hungrier: When you are stressed, your body releases cortisol, which does one thing very well—it increases appetite and cravings especially for sugar and carbs.

So if lately you have been mentally overwhelmed, emotionally drained, or not sleeping well, your hunger is not random , it could be biological.

Insulin resistance could be playing a role: If hunger feels very frequent with strong cravings (especially sweets) and it is really hard for you to control, there might be an underlying issue like insulin resistance.

In some cases, medications like glucophage help regulate blood sugar and reduce excessive hunger, but nutrition and lifestyle always come first.
Whatever your case is, instead of trying to eat less, focus on eating smarter:

  • Add protein to every meal (eggs, chicken, yogurt, cottage cheese)
  • Don’t fear healthy fats (olive oil, avocado, nuts)
  • Avoid long gaps without food
  • Sleep properly (very underrated)
  • Manage stress (this directly affects hunger)
  • Adjust your medication dosages

My Final Advice: The goal is not to ignore hunger. Hunger means your body is trying to tell you something. Understand the reason and respond to it the right way.
