Do We Really Need Collagen to Preserve Our Skin, Bones & Youth?

Ask Mira : Eating Right to Live Happy & Healthy

Collagen has become one of the most talked-about supplements in the world of beauty, fitness, and longevity. But do we really need to take collagen to preserve our skin, bones, joints, and youth?

First, let’s understand what collagen actually is. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, making up a large part of our connective tissues. It is found throughout the body: Skin, bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels and other connective tissues.

Think of it as part of the structural framework that gives our tissues strength, firmness, and support. Our body doesn’t simply absorb collagen from food and send it directly to our skin. Instead, it makes its own collagen.

To produce collagen, our cells use amino acids from dietary protein, mainly glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline along with important nutrients such as vitamin C, Zinc, Cipper and Iron.

Vitamin C, in particular, is essential for normal collagen formation.

So when you eat protein-rich foods such as eggs, fish, poultry, meat and dairy, your body breaks the proteins down into amino acids and can use those building blocks to produce new proteins, including collagen. And this process is happening continuously.

However, collagen production naturally declines as we get older. This is one of the reasons our skin gradually becomes thinner and less elastic, wrinkles become more visible, joints may become less resilient, and bone structure can change with age.

But aging isn’t the only factor. UV exposure, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, poor nutrition, and chronic oxidative stress can also negatively affect collagen production and accelerate its breakdown.

This brings us to collagen supplements.
Hydrolyzed collagen supplements, also called collagen peptides, are broken down into smaller protein fragments that are easier to digest and absorb. Once consumed, they do not simply travel directly to your wrinkles or joints and turn into collagen. They are digested into amino acids and peptides, which the body can then use in different ways.

However, the evidence is still evolving, and collagen supplements should not be considered a magic antiaging treatment.

If you want to support your body’s collagen production and preserve your health as you age, focus on: Adequate protein, plenty of vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables, minerals, strength training, healthy body composition, quality sleep, and daily protection from UV radiation.
And remember: collagen is not only about looking younger. It’s about Strong connective tissue, healthy bones, resilient joints, and muscle support are all part of healthy aging.

So, do we need collagen supplements? Not necessarily.
Your body is already capable of making collagen. A supplement can be an optional tool that may provide additional support, but it cannot replace the nutrients, movement, recovery, and lifestyle habits your body needs to age well.

You don’t preserve youth with one supplement. You build healthy aging by supporting your body every single day
