Belgium postpones embassy closure for a year, pledges to boost bilateral ties

Belgium has postponed the planned closure of its embassy in Kuwait for one year, signaling a commitment to deepen bilateral relations and explore new opportunities for cooperation.
Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot announced the decision on his official X account, highlighting discussions with Kuwait’s newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Jarrah Al-Jaber.
The two officials agreed to work closely to enhance collaboration across multiple fields, Al-Rai daily reports.
Prévot emphasized the importance of diplomacy in bringing peoples closer together, noting that the postponement of the embassy’s closure reflects Belgium’s intent to maximize opportunities for partnership with Kuwait.
The move comes after Prévot’s announcement in November 2025 of a comprehensive plan to restructure Belgium’s diplomatic network abroad, which initially included the closure of eight embassies and consulates, among them the mission in Kuwait — part of the country’s largest diplomatic repositioning in over a decade.
