BRICS calls for end to Middle East violence, condemns attacks on nuclear facilities

The BRICS group of emerging economies issued a strong joint statement on Tuesday calling for an immediate end to the cycle of violence in the Middle East, following recent Israeli and U.S. attacks on Iranian territory — a development involving one of its own member states.

The statement, released under the rotating presidency of Brazil, condemned any attacks on nuclear facilities and reaffirmed the bloc’s support for regional peace and stability. The BRICS group now includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

“It is urgent to break the cycle of violence and restore peace,” the statement declared, urging respect for international law and the sovereignty of nations.

The ten-member coalition voiced “deep concern about any attack targeting peaceful nuclear facilities in violation of international law and relevant International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) resolutions.” The group further emphasized that “nuclear safeguards, safety, and security must always be maintained — even in times of armed conflict — to protect both civilian populations and the environment.”

The call for restraint comes at a critical time, as tensions in the Middle East escalate. Iran recently approved a bill to suspend cooperation with the IAEA, citing security concerns following the attacks on its nuclear sites. The legislation must still be approved by Iran’s Guardian Council to become law.

In parallel, Tehran is preparing for state funerals this week, including one on Saturday for top military commanders and nuclear scientists killed during the 12-day conflict with Israel.
