
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said on Thursday that it is essential to abide by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Grossi made the remarks during a press conference held at the United Nations (IUN) on the sidelines of the Eleventh Review Conference of the Parties to the NPT.
Grossi sounded the alarm that a world with more countries possessing nuclear weapons would by no means be a safer world, underlining the need to adhere to nuclear non-proliferation.
He cautioned that there is significant concern that some countries, due to the mounting escalation and mutual distrust, might reconsider their previous commitment to refrain from pursuing nuclear weapons.
On Iran’s nuclear program, the IAEA chief that numerous efforts have been made to pave the way for the return of IAEA inspectors to Iran, but these steps remain delayed owing to a looming round of the military conflict.
Grossi stated that he is holding separate contacts and consultations with both Iran and the US as part of the negotiation process between both countries.
