GTD records 1.1 million traffic violations in 153 days, speeding tops list
Kuwait recorded more than 1.11 million traffic violations over 153 days from the beginning of April to the end of August, with speeding emerging as the most common offence, averaging approximately 2,717 violations a day.
Statistics published by Al-Rai, citing traffic data, showed that the Directorate General of Traffic registered a total of 1,118,668 direct and indirect violations as authorities continue efforts to curb dangerous driving and improve road safety. Speeding violations topped the list at 415,806, comprising approximately 358,900 violations detected indirectly through traffic cameras and 56,800 recorded directly by traffic officers.
The figures translate into an average of about 2,717 speeding violations daily. Parking violations ranked second, reaching 267,584, including approximately 224,500 indirect violations and 43,000 direct violations. This represented a daily average of around 1,748 offences.
Using a mobile phone while driving ranked third, with 94,945 violations, including 70,300 indirect and 24,600 direct violations, averaging about 620 a day. Failure to wear a seat belt came fourth, with 82,607 violations, comprising approximately 67,600 indirect and 14,900 direct offences.
Running red lights ranked fifth, accounting for 33,052 violations, including 29,300 detected indirectly and 3,710 recorded directly. Other offences included failure to comply with road markings, with 6,983 violations, and driving on the road shoulder, with 5,776 violations. Reckless and negligent driving accounted for a further 1,653 violations.
The figures highlight the scale of traffic violations recorded across Kuwait and underscore the continuing challenge facing authorities in promoting compliance with traffic regulations. Speeding, in particular, remained the leading offence, while mobile phone use and failure to wear seat belts continued to feature prominently among violations recorded during the five-month period.
