UN-Habitat Mission in Kuwait celebrates “The Family Environment Day”
The event aimed in instilling the concepts of sustainability, recycling and combating the effects of climate change in the hearts of the younger generations, who will create a healthy and happy future.
As part of the Urban October 2024 events and the “Kuwait Plants 6” initiative and in cooperation with the Public Authority for Youth represented by the Al-Shamiya Reserve along with participation from the Embassy and the Indonesian community, UN-Habitat in Kuwait held a “Family Environment Day” at the Al-Shamiya Reserve.
Dr. Ameera Al Hassan, Head of UN-Habitat Mission in Kuwait and the Arabian Gulf, said “We are proud to organize this environmental event that aims to instill the concepts of sustainability, recycling and combating the effects of climate change in the hearts of the younger generations.”
She delved particularly saying “The participation of children and families in such events enhances environmental awareness and encourages the adoption of sustainable practices in our daily lives”.
Emphasising further, Al Hassan added that “This event comes within the framework of our commitment in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Especially, Goal 11 that is related in making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable; Goal 12, which focuses on ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns, in addition to Goal 13 on climate action.”
Al Hassan explained more about the sustainable development goals related to this event which comes within the framework meant to achieve the sustainable development goals, especially:
- Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities – Promoting sustainable environmental practices in urban communities.
- Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production – Encouraging recycling and reducing waste.
- Goal 13: Climate Action – Raising awareness of the effects of climate change and the importance of agriculture and afforestation.
- Goal 15: Life on Land – Protecting terrestrial ecosystems and enhancing biodiversity.
Progressively, “The Family Environment Day” celebrations included planting of saplings and teaching children and families how to care for them, in addition to workshops on the basic principles of recycling and reusing waste, especially paper and plastic.
All the participants had the opportunity to interact with experts and volunteers to learn sustainable environmental practices that can be applied in their daily lives.
Dr. Ameera Al Hassan stressed the importance of cooperation and partnerships in achieving sustainable development, saying: “We are grateful for the support provided by the General Authority for Youth, the Embassy and the Indonesian community. These partnerships reflect the spirit of international and local cooperation to achieve a better urban future for all”.
On a concluding note she said, “We call on everyone to participate in such initiatives and cooperate with us in our efforts to achieve sustainable development, in order to provide an appropriate standard of living for children, youth, women and men in Kuwait and the Arabian Gulf”.
