US President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Japan at the end of October before traveling to South Korea to participate in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, the White House announced Wednesday.
Treasury Secretary Scott Besant confirmed during a Washington event, broadcast on CNBC, that Trump will first visit Japan and then attend the APEC summit in South Korea, where regional leaders will convene.
The APEC summit is set for October 31 and November 1, though the specific dates of Trump’s Japan visit have not yet been confirmed. This will mark his first trip to the Asia-Pacific region since returning to office in January.
Trump’s visit comes at a time of political uncertainty in Japan, as opposition leaders are negotiating to agree on a single candidate to challenge the ruling party for the post of prime minister.
In addition to Japan and South Korea, Trump will attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Malaysia from October 26 to 28, where he is expected to participate in the signing ceremony of a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia.
