President Donald Trump threatened Iran with strikes even more severe than those it suffered during the war with the United States and Israel if an agreement is not reached to put a final end to the conflict, which he expects to conclude before his visit to China next week.
Meanwhile, Tehran announced that it is studying an American proposal that “includes some unacceptable clauses,” and will convey its response to Pakistan, which is playing the role of mediator.
This comes as Axios and a Pakistani source reported that Washington and Tehran are “close to agreeing on a one-page memorandum to end the war,” a day after the US president announced the suspension of a military operation to escort ships in the Strait of Hormuz and spoke of “significant progress toward a full and final agreement.”
Trump told PBS that reaching an agreement was “possible” before his planned visit to Beijing on May 14 and 15, according to reports.
He added that sending his envoys Steve Wittkopf and Jared Kushner to conduct the talks was “unlikely,” saying, “I think we are capable of getting it done here, and perhaps we will dedicate the final meeting to the signing ceremony somewhere else.”
He revealed that the proposed plan includes transferring Iranian uranium to the United States, as part of the terms of the new agreement.
