Trump announces deployment of 5,000 additional US troops to Poland

US President Donald Trump announced plans to deploy an additional 5,000 American troops to Poland, citing strong ties with Polish President Karol Nawrocki and Warsaw’s growing strategic importance within NATO.

In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the decision followed Nawrocki’s election victory, which he had publicly endorsed. Trump described the move as part of strengthening the US-Poland alliance and enhancing regional security cooperation.

The announcement comes amid mixed signals from the Pentagon regarding the future of American troop deployments across Europe.

Earlier this week, Pentagon officials confirmed plans to reduce the number of US Army Brigade Combat Teams stationed in Europe from four to three as part of a broader military restructuring initiative.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell stated that the troop adjustments are linked to a strategic review aimed at advancing Trump’s “America First” defense agenda while encouraging European NATO allies to assume greater responsibility for the continent’s conventional defense, dw.com reports.

Despite the overall reduction in US military deployments across Europe, Polish officials stressed that Poland would not be affected. Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz previously confirmed that the number of American troops stationed in Poland would remain stable, while Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk said any redeployment would primarily impact Germany rather than Poland.

The latest development follows Washington’s earlier decision this month to withdraw approximately 5,000 troops from Germany amid growing tensions between Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over international security and diplomatic issues.

Trump and Nawrocki have maintained close political ties since meeting at the White House during Poland’s presidential campaign last year. Nawrocki later credited Trump’s support as a significant factor during the election race against candidates aligned with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his pro-European coalition.

Following Trump’s latest announcement, Nawrocki welcomed the decision and described the US-Poland alliance as a cornerstone of security for both Poland and Europe.

Poland remains one of NATO’s leading defense contributors, allocating approximately 4.48% of its GDP to military spending, the highest proportion among alliance members according to NATO’s 2025 estimates.
