Tanker hit near UAE as US moves to escort ships through Hormuz

Maritime tensions rise after vessel struck off Fujairah coast as US deploys naval escorts as Gulf shipping drops amid Iran standoff

A tanker was struck by unidentified projectiles off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, a British maritime agency reported Monday, as tensions continue to escalate in regional waters.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said the vessel reported being hit while sailing approximately 78 nautical miles north of Fujairah, adding that all crew members were safe.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and advised ships to exercise caution when transiting the area, according to news reports.

The development comes amid ongoing geopolitical strain between the United States and Iran, despite a ceasefire that took effect on April 8.

Iran continues to maintain tight control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments, while the United States has responded with a naval blockade.

Donald Trump announced that US forces would begin escorting commercial vessels through the strait starting Monday to ensure safe passage.

Meanwhile, US Central Command confirmed that the operation would involve guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 aircraft across land and sea, unmanned systems and around 15,000 personnel.

Maritime data from AXSMarine showed a decline in commercial shipping activity in the Gulf, with more than 900 vessels recorded as of April 29, down from over 1,100 at the start of the conflict.
