Fifa World Cup 2026

Scotland mark World Cup return with hard-fought victory over Haiti

Scotland celebrated a winning return to the FIFA World Cup after 28 years with a tense 1-0 victory over Haiti in their Group C opener at Gillette Stadium near Boston.

A deflected strike from midfielder John McGinn in the 28th minute proved enough to hand the Scots their first World Cup victory since defeating Sweden at Italia ’90 and their first win at a major international tournament since Euro 1996.

Backed by a crowd dominated by thousands of travelling Scottish supporters, Steve Clarke’s side produced a determined display to secure all three points in front of a packed 64,000-capacity stadium.

McGinn’s goal came after a flowing move involving Che Adams and Ben Doak. The ball eventually fell kindly to the Aston Villa captain, whose effort took a deflection off Haiti midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde before finding the net.

Scotland had earlier threatened through Scott McTominay, whose powerful effort struck the post midway through the first half as the Scots searched for an early breakthrough.

Despite taking the lead, Scotland were unable to fully dominate the contest and faced growing pressure from a spirited Haitian side in the closing stages. Haiti almost found a dramatic equaliser late in the match when Frantzdy Pierrot’s towering header narrowly missed the target.

The victory gives Scotland an important early advantage in Group C, especially with tougher encounters against Morocco and Brazil still to come. Morocco and Brazil played out a 1-1 draw in the group’s other opening fixture.

Scotland are aiming to reach the knockout rounds of the World Cup for the first time in their history, and the opening win has boosted hopes of progressing from the group stage.

For Haiti, ranked among the tournament’s outsiders, the match marked another significant chapter in an inspiring World Cup journey despite defeat. The Caribbean nation qualified amid difficult circumstances and continues to earn admiration for its resilience and determination on football’s biggest stage.
