Prominent Indian community member John Fernandes passes away after prolonged illness

The passing of John Rosario Fernandes on 12 August 2026, at the age of 69, brings to an end a life marked by hard work, enterprise, family and perseverance.
Born on 22 June 1957, John was part of a generation of Indians who came to the Gulf with determination to build a better future. Over the years, Kuwait became much more than a place of work for him. It became the place where he established his professional life, built businesses, developed lasting friendships and raised his family.
Building a business life
John lived in Kuwait for almost 4 decades and his entrepreneurial journey was closely associated with Sanbouk International Center, a business in Kuwait’s hardware and tools sector. Sanbouk International also had a presence within the wider community. The company is recorded as having supported community and cultural programmes in Kuwait.
From hardware to retail
John’s business interests extended beyond hardware. He was also associated with a supermarket business, reflecting another side of his entrepreneurial instincts.
The move into retail showed an ability to recognise everyday consumer needs and diversify beyond a single line of business. From hardware and building-related products to groceries and household requirements, his commercial journey reflected the practical approach of an entrepreneur who understood the importance of serving the community around him.
The man behind the businessman
John leaves behind his wife Margaret and children Jairus, Joswin, Jemima Daughter-in-Law June and Son-in-law Zico. For his children, the memory of their father will extend far beyond his professional achievements. They will remember the man who worked hard for his family, the guidance he offered, the responsibilities he carried and the many ordinary moments that eventually become the most precious memories.
A life woven into Kuwait
Kuwait played an important chapter in John’s life. It was here that his professional ambitions developed, his businesses took shape and his relationships with colleagues, customers, friends and members of the wider community grew.
His association with community events also indicates that his business interests were connected to the social life of the expatriate community. Supporting cultural and community initiatives was another way in which businesses such as Sanbouk International became part of the wider fabric of life in Kuwait.
The funeral will be held in India where the family will gather to pay the last respects.
