Partnership between UNHCR and Kuwait Bar Association to exchange expertise in displacement issues

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and Kuwait Bar Association signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) during a meeting between UNHCR’s Representative in Kuwait, Nisreen Rubaian, and Vice Chairman of Kuwait Bar Association, Adnan Abul, at the Association headquarters in Kuwait.

The agreement will enhance collaboration between UNHCR and the Association through exchange of expertise and capacity- building workshops for the members of the Association, focusing on humanitarian and legal aspects related to asylum and displacement. The Association will also provide pro-bono consultations, services, and legal support.

Nisreen Rubaian welcomed signing this agreement with the Kuwait Bar Association and stated: “This partnership reflects the importance of cooperation with the civil society organizations and specialized associations in the State of Kuwait, as evidenced by its long history, experience, and track record, and we appreciate its efforts to increase the legal awareness and to achieve justice, which are of utmost importance to this strategic partnership.” She added: “We appreciate the Association’s keenness to enhance cooperation with UNHCR by supporting its humanitarian work through exchanging expertise, hosting joint events and training, as well as offering judicial support to the relevant people who are in need of assistance.”

On his part, Adnan Abul stated: “We appreciate and commend the cooperation between the Kuwait Bar Association and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The role entrusted to us is our national duty, aiming to provide legal support and promote the legal knowledge among all members of society. Through the Legal Aid Committee, we assist the needy who require consultation and legal defense in accordance with the Law Regulating the Legal Profession. We are pleased with this unique partnership with UNHCR and look forward to expanding our social involvement in areas related to legal rights in the coming days.”

This is UNHCR’s first agreement of its kind in the State of Kuwait, which will strengthen the link between the humanitarian action and the social legal responsibility through legal advice for people of concern to UNHCR.
