Paraguay star Julio Enciso injured in World Cup warm-up match ahead of USA clash

Paraguay suffered a major injury setback ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after key attacking midfielder Julio Enciso was forced off injured during a warm-up match against Nicaragua.
The 22-year-old was stretchered off in the 23rd minute after a collision with Nicaragua defender Joap Alexander Gutiérrez, leaving the pitch in visible distress and tears.
Enciso, regarded as one of Paraguay’s most influential young players, was undergoing preparation for the team’s opening World Cup fixture against the United States next Friday.
Following the match, Paraguay head coach Gustavo Alfaro confirmed that the player sustained injuries to his hip and right thigh.
“He took the first hit and said he could continue. But immediately after, he suffered another impact to the hip and went down. He felt discomfort in the quadriceps area,” Alfaro said. “We hope the injury is not serious and that he can recover in time.”
The incident sparked protests from Paraguayan players, who questioned the physicality of Nicaragua’s play during the match.
Enciso’s condition will now be closely monitored as Paraguay prepare for Group D matches against the United States, Türkiye, and Australia.
The extent of the injury could prove a significant blow to Paraguay’s World Cup campaign, with Enciso expected to play a central role in the team’s attacking strategy.
