On behalf of the High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, Amir of the State of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, Crown Prince, the Government and the people of Kuwait on the occasions of Kuwait’s 62nd anniversary of Independence and 32nd anniversary of Liberation Day.
Since signing the Office Cooperation agreement 32 years ago, the strategic partnership between Kuwait and UNHCR only grew stronger. Kuwait extended help to more than 10 million refugees through UNHCR in Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Sudan, Somalia, and Pakistan, and most recently was among the first responders to the earthquake in Syria and Turkey , showing exemplary humanitarian leadership and commitment.
