The Indian government said on Sunday that 551 people died due to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours and 28,637 new cases were reported across the country.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said in its update that COVID-19 death toll climbed to 22,674 cases while overall positive cases soared to 849,553.

Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, New Delhi, Telangana, Karnataka, Assam and Bihar are among the worst affected Indian states.

The government has asked people, local governments and authorities to take all necessary precautions as the nation entered into the second phase of easing of restrictions, adding guidelines in the containment zones should be followed strictly.
