The Indian government said on Friday that there were 17,296 fresh coronavirus cases and 408 deaths due to COVID-19 in the country in the last 24 hours.

The Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said in its latest report that the total number of positive cases in the country rose to 490,401 with 17,296 fresh infections as the death toll stood at 15,301 with 407 new deaths.

The ministry said that there are 189,463 active cases and 285,637 people recovered. Maharashtra, Delhi, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat are considered the worst affected Indian states in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Indian government had announced its decision to extend the lockdown in containment zones while giving key relaxations in the less affected areas. However, many state governments are unwilling to extend the lockdown as it has already made the normal life and economic activities in jeopardy.
