Kuwait to reopen Alshumaimry Popular Café in Sharq as tribute to heritage pioneer

“The reopening of Alshumaimry Popular Café in Sharq this month marks a landmark step in Kuwait’s drive to revive traditional cafés, honoring a pioneering legacy while strengthening their cultural and social role in national life.”

The Ministry of Social Affairs will inaugurate the Alshumaimry Popular Café in Sharq this month, marking a major milestone in its broader program to revive Kuwait’s traditional cafés and preserve their cultural and social heritage.

The announcement was made by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Chairman of the Popular Cafés Fund, Dr. Khaled Al-Ajmi, who confirmed the launch of a comprehensive redevelopment project for Jahra Popular Café in cooperation with the Kuwait House of Al Sadu Society.

The initiative forms part of a wider national strategy to modernize traditional coffee shops while safeguarding their identity and strengthening their role as social, cultural, and recreational hubs.

Dr. Al-Ajmi said the redevelopment program continues the legacy of the late Suleiman Mohammed Alshumaimry, one of the most influential pioneers in establishing Kuwait’s popular coffee shops and defining their social mission. For decades, these cafés have served as gathering places for senior citizens, families, and youth, becoming a cornerstone of community life.

He added that the reopening of Alshumaimry Popular Café in Sharq follows an accelerated and comprehensive renovation process, undertaken in recognition of a man who devoted his life to public service and the preservation of Kuwaiti heritage.

A Life of Service: From Early Work to Public Administration

Born in 1920, Suleiman Alshumaimry learned reading, writing, and memorized the Holy Quran at a young age. His early career included pearl diving and maritime travel before he joined the police force.

He later moved into trade and eventually served at the Ministry of Information as Director of Procurement during the tenure of the late Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah as Minister of Information.

Renowned for his integrity and dedication, Alshumaimry earned the trust of officials and played a central role, alongside the late Saleh Al-Shehab, in launching Kuwait’s popular coffee shops in 1977 under tourism and recreational programs.

He later assumed full responsibility for managing these shops after they were placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor.

Transforming Cafés into Social Institutions

Alshumaimry is widely credited with transforming traditional cafés from seasonal leisure spaces into permanent social institutions operating year-round. He viewed them not merely as places of entertainment, but as cultural environments that preserve Kuwaiti heritage and reflect the spirit of the diwaniya, built on communication, solidarity, and community bonding.

Researcher Dr. Ahmad Abusido documented Al- Alshumaimry’s view that coffee shops served as intergenerational meeting points where retirees, seniors, and youth could exchange experiences and preserve cultural continuity.

He also highlighted Bonashi Café as Kuwait’s earliest known traditional shops, dating back to around 1775 during the reign of Sheikh Abdullah bin Sabah Al-Sabah. It was established near the old merchants’ market and Souq Al-Manakh by Abu Nashi from Al-Ahsa.

Social and Cultural Role of Popular coffee shops

Initially introduced through tourism programs in 1977, popular cafés quickly became year-round establishments after public demand for their continuity. Over time, they became self-sustaining through services offered to visitors.

Their primary purpose was to provide social spaces for retirees and senior citizens to gather, preserve traditions, and spend leisure time in a familiar cultural setting rooted in Kuwaiti customs. They also became increasingly popular among younger generations seeking to engage with older community members and benefit from their experience.

These cafés functioned as social hubs where people exchanged news, followed maritime updates, and maintained community ties. They served Arabic coffee, tea, and traditional smoking practices, while owners and assistants managed hospitality and daily operations.

Importantly, the shops brought together all segments of society, including merchants, craftsmen, dignitaries, and ordinary citizens, strengthening social cohesion. Many business discussions and agreements also originated within these spaces.

Trust of Leadership and Public Service

Alshumaimry earned the trust of the late Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who assigned him the responsibility of distributing financial assistance to elderly and needy coffee shops patrons. This role reflected his widely recognized reputation for fairness, honesty, and integrity.

Martyr of the Popular Cafés

On 11 July 1985, Alshumaimry was killed in a terrorist bombing that targeted one of Kuwait’s popular coffee shops, in an attack intended to undermine national unity and security.

In recognition of his contributions, the late Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad ordered that Sharq Popular Café be renamed in his honor, ensuring his legacy would remain tied to Kuwait’s social and cultural history.

Enduring Legacy and Ongoing Development

The reopening of Alshumaimry Popular Café represents a renewed tribute to a national figure whose name has become inseparable from Kuwait’s popular café movement. His work helped transform these venues into enduring heritage landmarks that preserve collective memory and strengthen community bonds.

Today, the Ministry of Social Affairs continues this legacy through ongoing development projects that include upgrading infrastructure, improving facilities and recreational areas, and introducing transparent investment opportunities. These efforts aim to ensure that popular coffee shops remain living symbols of Kuwaiti heritage and the enduring spirit of community life.
