Kuwait diving team ‘Cubs’ removes 203 tons of marine waste and sunken vessels in 2025

The Cubs Team of the Kuwaiti Diving Team has announced a major environmental achievement during 2025, successfully removing 105 tons of abandoned fishing nets and harmful marine waste, and salvaging nine sunken ships, boats, and marine vessels with a combined weight of 98 tons.

The team said the largest yacht recovered during the year weighed 30 tons and measured 57 feet in length, underscoring the technical complexity of the operation.

The team also noted that 107 marine moorings were maintained to ensure the safe berthing of boats and yachts, as part of efforts carried out by more than 30 young members and volunteers, reports Al-Rai daily.

The team’s environmental work covered a wide range of locations and activities, including the transport of wooden ships to the Scientific Center and Sea Day, beach cleanups in South Bneider, cleaning of the southern coastlines, and the removal of abandoned fishing nets from Kuwait Bay.

Additional operations included cleaning the Ashairij coast, protecting its wildlife, and removing entangled fishing nets from the reefs of Umm Deera.

The report also highlighted several specialized missions, including the first-ever salvage of a 30-ton sunken yacht in Salmiya, and the recovery of a sunken boat in Naqa’a Al-Fahaheel.

These operations were conducted to enhance practical skills, build operational patience, and develop advanced salvage techniques.

Further activities included the installation of marine moorings, beach cleaning campaigns, monitoring coral reefs, and the protection of sea turtles on Umm Al-Maradim Island, carried out in cooperation with Zain Company, in addition to the Khor Al-Zour coastal cleanup campaign.

Beyond field operations, the Cubs Team participated in an environmental meeting in Ajman, inspected the team’s new boat, contributed to awareness exhibitions at the Science Center, and took part in clean-up campaigns at Al-Abraj Beach and Khor Iskandar.

The team also joined World Cleanup Day activities targeting plastic waste and microplastics, participated in the book fair, and honored Zain Company for its continuous support of the Kuwaiti Diving Team since 1997.
