The Al-Sadu Craft Association announced that the World Crafts Council (WCC), has officially recognized Kuwait City as a “World Craft City for Sadu Weaving”.
The President of the Al-Sadu Craft Association, Sheikha Bibi Duaij Al-Sabah, stated today, Thursday, 20th March, that the accreditation followed an official visit by World Crafts Council experts, who evaluated Kuwait’s dedication to preserving and advancing the art of Sadu weaving.
Sheikha Bibi Al-Sabah stated that the delegation, led by International Crafts Council President Saad Al-Qaddoumi, conducted field visits to the Sadu house and key cultural sites to observe artisans at work, and assess Kuwait’s efforts in sustaining the craft. She noted that the delegation also met with representatives from government agencies, cultural institutions, and local craftsmen to explore ways to elevate Sadu weaving on the global stage.
Furthermore, Sheikha Bibi Al-Sabah emphasized that this recognition places Kuwait City on the global craft map, showcasing the rich heritage of Sadu weaving and reaffirming Kuwait’s dedication to preserving its artisan traditions. It also paves the way for cultural tourism growth, empowers Kuwaiti artisans to reach international markets, and fosters engagement with the global craft community.
Sheikha Bibi Al-Sabah added that Al-Sadu is a vital part of Kuwait’s heritage, with its geometric patterns and vibrant colors reflecting the nation’s history and culture. She highlighted its pivotal role in the lives of the Bedouin people over the centuries, serving as a key element in tents, furnishings, and decorations. Today, it remains a symbol of national identity and artisanal excellence.
Notably, Kuwait had previously applied to the World Crafts Council for the title of “International Craft City” for Sadu weaving through the house of Al-Sadu, a member of the Council.
