Kuwait at UN condemns repeated Iranian attacks, reaffirms right to self-defence

. . . warns UN over escalating Iranian attacks and regional security threats, calls for global action

Kuwait on Wednesday strongly condemned what it described as repeated Iranian attacks on its territory, calling them a flagrant violation of national sovereignty and international legitimacy resolutions, while reaffirming its inherent right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter.

The position was outlined in a speech delivered by Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Nasser Al-Hain, during the 114th session of the International Labour Conference.

Al-Hain said Kuwait is facing “systematic and repeated targeting” since the beginning of the year, including the latest incident, which he said occurred at dawn on Wednesday. He stressed that such actions represent a serious breach of sovereignty and international law, citing multiple international resolutions condemning attacks on civilian and vital infrastructure.

He warned that escalating regional tensions, including developments in the Strait of Hormuz, are threatening global stability and could have severe consequences for workers and civilians worldwide.

The ambassador urged the international community, including the UN Security Council, to assume its legal and moral responsibilities to halt such attacks and ensure the protection of civilians, workers’ rights, and regional stability.

Al-Hain also linked the security situation to broader challenges in global labour markets, highlighting the impact of digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and biological risks on employment systems, and calling for updated legislative frameworks to protect workers and ensure labour justice.

He further reiterated Kuwait’s support for just causes, including the Palestinian issue, expressing concern over restrictions on workers in occupied territories and stressing the importance of freedom of movement and access to livelihoods.

On domestic labour policy, he noted that Kuwait continues to modernize its labour laws in line with its development vision “New Kuwait 2035,” including efforts to combat human trafficking, improve worker protection systems, and enhance shelters for expatriate workers with legal, health, and psychological support services.

The statement concluded by reaffirming Kuwait’s commitment to international labour standards and its role as a constructive partner in shaping a fair and sustainable future of work.
