Kuwait alerts public over increasing online scams and fake bank links

Banks in Kuwait, in coordination with the Central Bank and security authorities, continue to intensify awareness campaigns such as “Let’s Be Aware,” urging customers not to open suspicious links, avoid sharing confidential banking information, and verify all communications through official banking channels.
Authorities in Kuwait have warned of a growing wave of online fraud involving malicious links and messages that falsely claim recipients are entitled to financial transfers or prize winnings. These scams often appear legitimate and are designed to trick users into clicking links that lead to the theft of personal and banking information.
The fraudulent messages typically arrive via email or SMS with subject lines suggesting urgent financial gains, such as “you have won” or “pending money transfer.” Victims are told that funds cannot be released unless a small fee is paid or personal details are updated through a provided link, creating a false sense of urgency and trust.
Security experts say these scams rely heavily on psychological manipulation, exploiting emotions such as excitement or curiosity, often referred to as the “happiness trigger”, to pressure individuals into clicking malicious links without verifying their authenticity.
Once users engage with the links, they are often directed to fake banking websites that request sensitive information such as account numbers, credit card details, or one-time passwords (OTP). Cybercriminals then use this data to access accounts and steal funds.
Officials note that these tactics are part of a broader trend of increasingly sophisticated cyber fraud operations, often carried out by cross-border criminal groups using social engineering techniques to bypass traditional security measures.
