KFAED, WHO partner to power Yemen’s healthcare with solar energy

In a collaborative effort to improve healthcare infrastructure in Yemen, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) and the World Health Organization (WHO), have launched a transformative project focused on renewable energy.

Importantly, this initiative aims to equip six health facilities with solar power systems and battery storage, ensuring uninterrupted access to life-saving medical services. By reducing reliance on fuel generators, the project not only enhances energy security but also strengthens climate resilience, paving the way for a more sustainable healthcare system in Yemen.

Spanning two years with a budget of $2.5 million, this project is set to directly benefit over 935,000 people, while an estimated 1.6 million individuals will benefit indirectly each year. It underscores a shared commitment to building sustainable health infrastructure, promoting environmental responsibility, and enhancing healthcare delivery in fragile settings.

The WHO Representative in Kuwait, Dr. Asad Hafeez stated that, Reliable electricity is not a luxury — it’s a lifeline. This project ensures that healthcare workers in Yemen can provide essential care even in times of fuel scarcity, strengthening the resilience and sustainability of the health system.

Moreover, this groundbreaking project exemplifies the WHO’s commitment to bridging humanitarian and development health interventions, demonstrating the power of innovative partnerships in sustaining and improving essential healthcare services.

The partnership between the Kuwait Fund and WHO underscores Kuwait’s global leadership in health, humanitarian efforts, and sustainable development, showcasing its commitment to impactful and lasting change.
