A series of earthquakes struck Iraq’s northern Kirkuk Governorate from Thursday evening through Friday morning, with authorities confirming that no casualties or significant damage were reported.
The General Authority for Meteorology and Seismic Monitoring, under Iraq’s Ministry of Transport, said its seismic monitoring stations detected several tremors during the period, including a magnitude 3.9 earthquake that occurred approximately 30 kilometres east of Kirkuk.
According to the authority, the strongest tremor was felt by residents in the governorate, but no injuries or material losses were recorded.
Officials said the seismic activity was closely monitored by the national observatory network, which continues to track earthquake movements across Iraq and neighbouring countries.
The authority also revealed that 50 earthquakes were recorded across Iraq and surrounding regions during June, none of which resulted in human casualties, highlighting the country’s continued exposure to low- to moderate-intensity seismic activity.
Authorities urged residents to remain calm while reaffirming that monitoring centres continue to assess seismic developments and issue updates whenever necessary.
