Iran says agreement with U.S. ‘not imminent’ despite progress in nuclear, war talks

Amid intensifying Middle East tensions and parallel regional crises, Iran has signaled that an agreement with the United States is not imminent, despite diplomatic efforts reporting limited progress on key issues including the nuclear dispute and sanctions relief.

Iran has stated that an agreement with the United States is not imminent, even as both sides report progress in ongoing discussions aimed at easing regional tensions and addressing the long-running nuclear dispute.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said Tehran and Washington have made, what he called, “understandings on many issues” during recent exchanges, but stressed that expectations of an immediate deal were premature.

“It is correct to say that we have reached a conclusion on a large portion of the issues under discussion,” he said, while adding that “no one can claim that the signing of an agreement is imminent.”

The remarks come amid renewed diplomatic activity involving multiple international actors seeking to de-escalate tensions linked to the broader Middle East conflict. The talks reportedly focus on Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief, and the possibility of re-establishing a framework for engagement with Washington, news agencies reports.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had earlier suggested that a breakthrough agreement could be reached quickly, saying a deal might materialize “today,” reflecting cautious optimism within parts of the US administration.

However, Iranian officials have accused Washington of shifting positions during negotiations, suggesting that despite technical progress, political differences remain unresolved.

At the same time, regional tensions continue to shape the diplomatic landscape, with parallel developments involving Israel, Lebanon, and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz adding pressure to already fragile negotiations.

Iran has also indicated willingness to discuss its nuclear program and enriched uranium stockpiles in exchange for sanctions relief and the unfreezing of assets, but only if commitments under any potential memorandum of understanding are fully implemented.

The negotiations are taking place alongside broader international mediation efforts involving regional and global powers, all seeking to prevent further escalation and push toward a long-term diplomatic settlement.
