Cleaning the Kuwait Towers Beach and Removing Dead Fish from the Bay

An Environmental Campaign by the Diving Team

The Kuwaiti Diving Team, affiliated with the Environmental Voluntary Foundation, carried out a volunteer campaign today, Thursday, to clean the Kuwait Towers beach. The campaign, which saw active participation from the team’s young members, coincided with World Earth Day and Gulf Environment Day, as part of the team’s ongoing efforts to promote environmental awareness and social responsibility among youth.

Team leader Waleed Al-Fadhel told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that the campaign involved a group of volunteers of various ages and focused on engaging young people in cleaning the beach and removing plastic and microplastic waste, which poses a direct threat to the marine environment and marine life.

Al-Fadhel added that the team is continuing its intensive efforts for the tenth consecutive day to remove dead fish from Kuwait Bay in cooperation with several government agencies. He explained that the current fish mortality rates are within the normal range associated with seasonal phenomena such as rising temperatures and algal blooms (red tide).

He emphasized the importance of swift intervention to remove dead fish before they decompose, given its vital role in maintaining oxygen levels in the water and mitigating negative environmental impacts. He stressed the need for continued comprehensive environmental surveys to ensure the health of the marine environment.

He noted that Kuwait Bay is the second largest fish nursery in the world and that efforts to remove dead fish are primarily aimed at protecting fish stocks from depletion and ensuring ecological balance in this sensitive area.

For his part, the team’s leader, Mishari Al-Sanousi, stated that the youth’s participation in this campaign is part of the team’s strategy to instill the concepts of volunteer work and environmental responsibility in the younger generation. He added that involving children strengthens their connection to the environment and encourages them to adopt sustainable practices from a young age.

Al-Sanousi further explained that the campaign focused on raising awareness about the dangers of plastic waste, which threatens the lives of marine organisms and birds. He affirmed the team’s commitment to continuing to organize periodic campaigns to clean the coasts and seabed, contributing to the protection of the marine environment as a national treasure and a symbol of Kuwait’s cultural heritage.

He explained that these initiatives reflect the spirit of teamwork and volunteerism among Kuwaiti youth, calling on all members of society to actively contribute to environmental preservation to ensure its sustainability for future generations.

He noted that the team’s young members distributed one hundred stickers of the Arfaj flower to beachgoers, considering it a national symbol reflecting Kuwait’s resilience and environmental identity, in a step aimed at raising community awareness and linking environmental values to national identity.
