Canadian Embassy holds planting event to mark Thanksgiving
To mark Canadian Thanksgiving 2024 and Urban October 2024, UN-Habitat has joined hands with the Embassy of Canada to launch “Urban October for Young Citizens and Families” with the children’s event “Come Plant With Us!”
Urban October is an opportunity for communities around the world to be part of the conversation about the challenges and opportunities created by the rapid rate of change in our towns and cities.
The Canadian Embassy and UN Habitat are working together to encourage individuals, communities, cities and governments, at every age and every level, to participate in activities that take steps toward addressing change in our climate and urban environments. Urban October begins with World Habitat Day on Oct 2nd and ends with World Cities Day on Oct 31st.
On this occasion- and timed on the start of the agricultural season in Kuwait; the volunteer development team, the people of Shamiya, and the Canadian community in Kuwait all come together for this ground-breaking initiative. It was designed to educate and inspire youth and their families through interactive activities, reinforcing the significance of climate action and sustainable, inclusive cities. The project is closely aligned with the UN-Habitat’s 2023 Habitat Assembly theme:
“Engaging youth to create a better urban future” and Canada’s commitments to climate action.
The day promises to be both fun and educational with the following enrichment and engagement activities for children and their families:
Sustainable Scavenger Hunt: An interactive quest offering children an educational tour of Shamiya Reserve, focused on elements of sustainability and urban planning;
Green Thumb Project: Guided planting activities for children, highlighting the vital role of green spaces within urban landscapes and upcycling of reusable materials;
Our New Planet – Art & Craft Corner: A creative hub where children can express themselves using upcycled materials;
Community Narratives: Children’s story time featuring books that inspire conversations about community-building and environmental stewardship.
The objective of this unique collaboration is to offer enriching activities that stimulate the imaginations of young citizens and their families, laying the foundation for more sustainable and inclusive urban futures.
We are proud to be guests, for the third consecutive year, of the volunteer development team at “Shamiya Reserve” affiliated with the Public Authority for Youth. This team is dedicated to greening and recycling and is considered a role model to be emulated in Kuwait; a civil and volunteer embodiment of the seventeen sustainable development goals.
This event is an ideal way to mark Canadian Thanksgiving, which is celebrated in October every year. It is a time to focus on gratitude, kindness, and care and stewardship of our environment. On this occasion, the Canadian Embassy thanks the Volunteer Development Team of “Shamiya Reserve” for providing this special opportunity for the Canadian communityand friends of Canada to celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving and take care of our environment.
