Amid heightened tensions, US urges citizens in Kuwait to stay alert amid threat warnings

The United States has issued a security alert on April 1, 2026, warning that Iran and affiliated militant groups may be planning to target locations in Kuwait, including universities, particularly those linked to American institutions. The warning comes amid broader Iranian threats against US interests across the Middle East.

US authorities say they are closely monitoring the situation and have urged American citizens in Kuwait to remain vigilant and prepared for potential emergencies.

Travel Disruptions and Exit Options

Commercial flights from Kuwait remain suspended due to ongoing security threats, including risks from missile and drone attacks. The US Embassy has advised citizens to consider overland travel to Saudi Arabia, where flights are still operating. Travelers must hold valid passports and visas, with prior visa application strongly recommended to avoid delays.

Passengers using airlines such as Kuwait Airways and Jazeera Airways must complete check-in procedures at designated locations in Kuwait before being transported by bus to airports in Saudi Arabia.

No Further Evacuation Transport Planned

The embassy has indicated it does not plan to organize additional evacuation buses, citing the availability of private and commercial overland transport options.

Stay-or-Leave Guidance

Americans who choose to remain in Kuwait are advised to shelter in place in secure locations, stock essential supplies, and avoid unnecessary movement. Authorities stress the importance of staying away from windows, monitoring official updates, and following local instructions.

Administrative Requirements

Expatriates in Kuwait must obtain an electronic exit permit via the Sahel app before leaving the country. Additionally, Kuwait has announced automatic extensions for certain visitor visas.

Embassy Operations

The US Embassy in Kuwait City has suspended routine consular services but continues to provide emergency assistance through a 24/7 task force.

Safety Recommendations

US citizens are urged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), maintain communication with family, keep documents ready, avoid public gatherings, and stay alert to changing conditions.

Overall, the advisory highlights heightened regional tensions, limited travel options, and the need for preparedness as security risks persist.

The Embassy is aware of the companies that offer international transportation services, either by bus or private vehicle, between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Some companies also transport pets. The U.S. Embassy does not endorse any company. Additional options may be available.
